Language variations in media 1.3 Handout

Depending on the different media, there is a different language. In my conclusion, the spoken language has to attract people, so it would be more effective to increase the audience if they use the dialects.
We analyzed last week some of the examples used in class, and the most of the examples of the variation of the language are to make humour.
Also, the usage of dialects benefit the comunity who use them, this way the minority languages won't disappear.
The variations of the languages are easier to find on the TV. On the radio too, but is not so common. For example of the radio, I'll say that Gaztea uses the dialects to attract young people. But in the same way of television, when they have to speak about a new or something like that, they use the formal Basque. So my conclusion of all these variations is to make humour, or attract some kind of colective of the audience.
The examples we used in class, majority of them are to make humour; Kutsidazu bidea Ixabel, Wazemank, "Bienvenidos al norte"...
This is the trailer of the film Bienvenidos al norte, the french film which was one of the examples in class, but I'll put it translated to Spanish to see the difference better:

The situation of Basque and Catalan in media 1.2.Handout

What is the situation nowadays of these minority languages?

Well, we could say there are more possibilities to acces to Basque and Catalan media than few years ago. So that helps to develop the languages, but I still think the standard Spanish make them stay on its shadow. Tv in Spanish offers more options than the others do, and that makes us turn to watch the succesful programs.
Eitb is the only TV channel which broadcasts in Basque, in my opinion they should have more of humorous section. The Basque used in most of the programs like films, series...is the standard, and the humor done in dialects are much more succesful.
Let's see a fraction of the humorous film Kutsidazu bidea, Ixabel, spoken in dialects:

For the people who don't speak Euskera: This is a guy who is learning the standard Basque, and he is living with a very very basque family. Family laugh at him because he is trying to speak the formal language, and they speak dialects.
The idea I want to transmit is if the dialects would be spoken in films, series...the audience would increase.

In the case of Catalan, there is a channel, TV3, which is exclusively in Catalan. It has a general programation, for the development of culture and the language. It is only broadcasted in Cataluña, but is possible to acces to it by other administrations.
TV3 has been audience leader for 6 years, so we can say that it is quite popular and is developing the Catalan.

My conclusions are that thanks to media is possible to increase the speakers of the minority languages. It makes possible to be in touch with the language and is easier to learn it.
Although it could be better if we would have more options to choose and don't turn to the Spanish channels.

How the media influence the language

Media are responsible for changes in languages. Is this change damaging the language?

The TV should use the standard language, but not always is doing it. For example in the news the language used is the "standard", but if we look at tv series, the language is a language used with a common vocabulary, full of vulgarities.

Otherwise, the source of all is the Internet. Tv is in the Internet, so what should concern us is the internet.
Internet is a way where people can comunicate each other, and the way they communicate is written. This is the beginning of the problem among the young people, and not so young. They write a sentence with shorter words, for example, "how r u?", "xx"...
Now is so extended that we can talk about a new language in internet. Not everyone can understand this language, only the people who use it.
In my opinion the change that media are doing to language is negative, because the internet language is extending and there are a lot of grammar mistakes.

My conclusion is that the media has a terrible influence in the language usages and in the social behavior, and it could get worse.

This is a clear example of a generalized vulgar phrase:
